The Foundation also engages its partners and awardees in different activities geared towards giving back to the society. Through these initiatives, the Metrobank Foundation empowers its awardees and partners to become better citizens of the community. As part of its contributions to help improve health care services in the country, Dr. Ty donated a two-hectare lot along Diosdado Macapagal Avenue, costing about P1.2 billion, that would be the site of a modern tertiary medical center complex. This new hospital, once completed, will have a 1,000-bed capacity, making it one of the biggest hospitals in the country owned by a not-for-profit organization.

Background In 1993, UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) inaugurated October 5 as World Teachers’ Day, a day to celebrate teachers and the central role they play in guiding children, youths & adults through the life-long learning process. To contribute to the growth and development of the teaching profession in the country as well as to publicly express appreciation to mentors, both active and retired, a Teachers’ Month Campaign (TMC) was conceived in July 2008 by the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), De La Salle Philippines (DLSP), Philippine Business for Education (PBEd), and Campaigns Social Response (CSR), with the special participation of the Department of Education (DepEd) and the support of key business institutions. The Teachers’ Month Campaign will be launched once again in 2009 during Metrobank’s 47th anniversary celebrations on September 4, 2009 highlighted by the awarding of the Metrobank Foundation Search for Outstanding Teachers (SOT) and will culminate on October 5 as the World Teachers’ Day. The theme is “My Teacher, My Hero! Objectives The Teachers’ Month Campaign aims to: a) generate widespread awareness and support for World Teachers’ Day; b) use the occasion to celebrate the unique role and service that teachers play in guiding families, strengthening of communities, and building the nation; c) revitalize the image of teaching as a vocation by increasing public awareness on the value of teachers in Philippine society and national development; d) and affirm current and retired Filipino teachers by coordinating a chain of establishments to provide value added service or discounts to teachers. Key Cooperators Possible collaborators for the 2009 TMC are the following groups: a) coalition of student councils and organizations; b) consortia of educational institutions and associations; c) business establishments; d) professional organizations/corporate foundations; e) local government units (LGUs). Success Indicators The success of the TMC will be measured over time as follows: a) annual celebration in the Philippines of October 5 as World Teachers' Day on the same level as that of the celebration of Mother's or Father's Day; b) increase in enrolment in Education degree courses in the undergraduate and graduate levels; c) increased incentives for teachers; d) recognition and appreciation of the sacrifices of teachers who choose to stay in the profession and in the Philippines on the same level as the recognition of OFWs who are hailed as heroes in the country. Develop Your Own Teachers’ Month Activity Everyone can help celebrate the lives and work of those most instrumental in shaping our youth for a better future. Students, businesses, NGO and civic organizations are invited to develop their own activities in support of Teachers Month such as: 1. On this day, everyone who has ever been a student is invited to say ‘THANK YOU!’ to at least 1 teacher who has made a difference in his or her life. 2. Students can write a letter, send a card or gift, and let others know, by sending a copy of their thank-you note to www.teachersday.ph. 3. Commercial and retail outlets can announce the day, offer discounts/freebies or special promos for teachers; stores can designate special Teacher Gifts and merchandise them. 4. Print publications can have special Teacher’s Day sections similar to Mothers’ Day lifestyle sections, feature stories on teachers on that day, section on greetings. 5. Radio and TV networks can feature the day in their shows, have hosts and celebrities greet their teachers, and develop special segments around teachers for the day. 6. Business and civic organizations can announce the day to their employees and members and encourage everyone to thank their teachers. _____________________________ For queries, please contact the TMC Secretariat c/o tel. no. “Compared to us, she was like a goddess of Math. She multiplied faster than a calculator. She was always cool and composed; she would smile and sometimes even hum her favorite tune in the middle of the competition. We would be hysterical over the questions that came our way.” So described Henry Jefferson Morco of his former schoolmate Nelly Chua, one of the people who inspired the now self-confessed “numbers addict.” The 2008 Metrobank Math Challenge (MMC) first placer in the individual category at the elementary level, Henry remembered watching his “idol” during the first MMC competition he joined back in Grade 1. The Metrobank Math Challenge is an annual math competition sponsored by the Metrobank Foundation and conducted in partnership with the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), Department of Education (DepEd), and First Metro Investment Corporation (FMIC). The contest aims to awaken greater interest in math among elementary and high school students from across the country and to discover Mathematical talents among the youth. Previously conducted in the National Capital Region, the Math Challenge was expanded to include elementary and high school students nationwide starting in 2001. After passing the screening test given by his school, Henry became part of the team that represented Chiang Kai Shek College in the grade school category. Since then, solving complicated Math problems became part of Henry’s daily routines. And while he and his teammates did not win in their first try, Henry knew he would be in the competition each year. “After my first contest, I knew it was going to be fun. I discovered Math and it smiled back at me.” Indeed, number-crunching has endeared itself to Henry, who went on to compete and win in regional math competitions such as the 2008 Australian Math Competition where he garnered the highest honor as well as the 2nd Hua Luo Geng Mathematics Elite Invitational Competition in Beijing, China where he also brought home first honors. “Math is not supposed to be rigid and rote. It is flexible and has a life of its own,” Henry said, adding that taking part in these competitions has taught him “many of life’s lessons that extend far beyond mathematics and the academic world.” “I have learned to befriend competitors. I have realized that we only reap what we sow. That failure is the beginning of success. That we have to get to the bottom of the problem,” Henry enumerated, sharing how losing does not mean the fight is over. After all, he stated, “bilog ang bola.” Now a high school freshman, Henry looks forward to competing in the secondary division of the Metrobank Math Challenge next year. “It is such a wonderful event, simply worth being a part of. Despite the difficulties and failures, it is a truly enriching experience to have.” The 2009 Metrobank Math Challenge is now open for applications. The deadline for submission to all DepEd Divisions is from December1-5, 2008. FOR TEACHERS RP unfolds ‘longest’ tribute banner By Anna Valmero INQUIRER.net First Posted 19:25:00 10/23/2008 PASIG CITY, Philippines—High school and college students from across the Philippines unfolded at the Mall of Asia bayside a 173.65-meter (569.72-foot) cloth containing messages of gratitude for teachers. This is the Philippines attempt to win an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. The banner is set to break China’s current record for the longest ‘Thank You’ banner for teachers at 100 meters unfolded at Fuyang Square. The Philippines also attempts to set the record for the most number of ‘Thank You’ messages addressed to teachers, said Michaela Muñoz, chairperson of the educational leadership and management department of the De La Salle University (DLSU). DLSU is assigned to submit to the Guinness body the measurement and count the total number of messages written in the sewn cloth banner. At present, the number of messages is estimated to average at 150 to 200 per 10-meter cloth. Dubbed “A Big Thank You to Our Teachers”, the “longest” thank you banner for teachers is part of the culmination of the Teacher’s Month celebration in the country. Traditionally, each school separately celebrates Teacher’s Day October 5, as set by UNESCO. “Teachers are very instrumental in our lives because as the saying goes one can make or break an individual,” said Muñoz. “This event recognizes and celebrates the importance of our teachers.” According to Muñoz, the Teacher’s Month campaign is a brain-child of Armin Luistro, DLSU-Manila President. Luistro hopes to have a month-long celebration for teachers and have different schools across the nation join the event. This is to revitalize the image of teaching as a vocation and the value of teachers in the Filipino society and national development, said Muñoz. Luistro as representative of De La Salle Philippines partnered with Metrobank Foundation Inc., which offered support by networking with commercial partners to provide special packages for teachers this October. Other partners include Philippine Business for Education and Campaigns Social Response Department of Education.
